An individual piece of furniture for a home that celebrates colour and creativity.
This vintage solid mahogany chest of drawers has been given a new lease of life with a bespoke hand-painted finish, combining rich olive green with beautifully blended shades of blue and green across the drawer fronts.
Traditional character meets contemporary colour in a piece that feels both timeless and individual. The original inlay designs on the drawer fronts have been carefully preserved and remain visible beneath the layered finish, adding depth, texture and a subtle sense of history.
A little about the finish
Rather than simply painting over the original details, I used layers of coloured stains across the drawer fronts, allowing the existing inlay designs and natural character of the wood to remain part of the finished piece.
The result is a softly blended, painterly effect, with subtle variations in tone that give the surface depth and movement. The olive green frame provides a striking contrast, while the original decorative round handles and keyhole details complement the chest’s traditional shape.
As with all individually hand-painted furniture, the finish has its own character and nuances. This is not a factory-produced finish, but a piece that has been thoughtfully transformed by hand.
Why I love this piece
* Solid mahogany: A vintage piece with the warmth and character of traditional furniture.
* Individual hand-painted finish: Olive green framing with layered blue-green drawer fronts.
* Original inlay detailing: Preserved and highlighted rather than concealed beneath opaque paint.
* Traditional details: Decorative circular handles, keyhole escutcheons and elegant shaped feet.
* One of a kind: A unique piece for someone who appreciates furniture with personality.
Style it your way
This chest would sit beautifully in an eclectic or bohemian interior, a relaxed country home, or a contemporary space that needs a little more colour and character.
Use it in a bedroom for clothing and accessories, in a hallway as a statement piece, or in a living room for practical storage that doubles as a talking point.
Pair it with natural textures, collected objects, vintage artwork or contrasting colours to create a home that feels personal rather than styled straight from a catalogue.
A more considered approach to furniture
At McKay Designs, I believe that well-made vintage furniture deserves to be appreciated and reimagined.
By working with existing pieces and developing individual finishes, I aim to create furniture that celebrates craftsmanship, colour and the beauty of giving something old a new chapter.
This chest is a unique, hand-finished piece. Once sold, there will not be another exactly like it.
